Wow, sounds complicated huh?! Well, in a sense ...it is. However, once you're all setup and running -- this IDE will run like the wind...
In this tutorial, I'll be working with a few of the most common tools for the Web Development market today. Many Designers and Developers swear by certain bundles of software, so I will keep this article as loose and unbiased as possible. Please feel free to replace your own preferred apps with the ones I've chosen. In today's technology industry, we are no longer bound by a limitation of great software applications. I have chosen these popular tools for our Integrated Development Environment:
- Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8
- Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 9.0
- Zennaware Cornerstone 1.1.7
- Mac OS X Terminal 2.0.2
- Panic Transmit 3.6.7
- Subversion 1.5+
- Dedicated Server with Root access
Note: At the time this article was written, all the tools listed above were current and up-to-date. The software versions may vary depending on your OS X Leopard compatibility and whether or not you've upgraded your applications and to "Snow" Leopard yet. Of course, most of the software companies listed have probably released a Snow Leopard update to their apps, so you should be ready-set-go!
Are you Hardcore?
Lets face it, using Notepad or TextEdit, BBEdit, Text Mate, Text Wrangler (or the equivalent), while combing through thousands of lines of code hour-by-hour and all you see is monochromatic text ...well just sucks. You don't have to prove how "hardcore" you are as a Programmer or Developer by swearing by only a text editor and the CLI. Nope, not gonna happen in this article. I'm beyond that ridiculous and trivial debate after all these years.
Efficiency is the Real Deal
